they got a number 1 single, do they really need more promotion?

They make me retch.

I don't think they were ever not sellouts though, I bet they'd have jumped at any chance to show off from the very beginning.

"But you can go to the other extreme in hip-hop videos where they're literally advertising mobile phones in the video or starting their own clothing labels. We're not quite at that level yet."
YET. Gee, it's wonderous they haven't started yet. They should have dropped a whole bunch of Nokia phones on the ground to show how Unbreakable they are and used the in-built torches on the phones for Light Surrounding You.
It's both: they're clever and they're sell-outs. Simple as that. However, I think if they sign up for too many deals they become celebrities, not musicians. Call me a purist, but that's what I think. Selling your music is great... but it should be done on the strength of it being good, not on the strength of it being pushed by Nokia or Virgin or a TV show. I think all of this detracts from their songs and means they're taken less seriously by honest music fans.
I don't understand Dann's point about music being free and the kids thinking that it's free though. They've thought that for a long time and many bands have still managed to survive, and continue to survive, without all this corporate nonsense. That seems a redundant argument.

And they don't seem to be overpromoting themselves in NZ. And besides, whichever way works for them...if it means more music and more shows then I'm up for that Smile

You're all probably going to hate me for saying this, but I completely agree with the boys. There is too much competition in todays market, too many people out there fighting for the same prize, to not have some form of sponsorship behind you. This is not to say the more sponsorship you have means you automatically make it, but its easier for upcoming bands to have SOMEONE to help pay the bills, and since both parties get promotion out of it, its a win win situation.

This kind of thing is quite common in the local scene in NZ, with smaller companies obviously.

mind out of the gutter please tango Laughing

and no i don't hate u eryn. i agree. i mean like they said, the home and away thing wasn't their idea (and why would you! lol) but it worked for them, number 1 single and for the shows cliff hanger. Wink

Eryn :

You and I both know that's rubbish. The more money someone has behind them, the more exposure they get, the more they'll sell. If you have loads of cash behind you, your chances of "making it" increase enourmously. Look at all the people from Australian Idol, for example. Even if they don't genuinely make it to number one, they still make it to number one, simply because the record companies and Channel Ten throw obscene amounts of money behind them to the detriment of decent music.*

*I didn't mind Damien Leith though. Must be because he's Irish.

Have you ever heard of My Life Story? The band?

They got sponsored by some multi millionaire friend of the family.

But because they're crap, they've not gone anywhere in two years.

So that's one example out of how many successful ones? Money makes the music world go 'round and dictates what a lot of us are exposed to and what a lot of us buy. It's a fact. Yes, there have been corporate failures, but you'll find people won't throw disgusting amounts of money behind something that they think isn't going to work. They make sure it's commercially viable first, thus there's the shift towards the mundane in Evermroe.

Thats one example that you know of. How many are there that we arent aware of? And people arent smart. Something that THEY think is commercially viable isnt always a sentiment echoed by the general public.

This is how things are done now. Shard's right, it shouldnt be an issue.

Oh for fucks sake.

Making music is what they do for a living. It's how they make money to survive.

If you were working in an office and you got offered a raise and a promotion, you fucking take it.

The advertising and such that Evermore receive is much like a promotion in an office job. They're taking what they can and I don't blame them. Being a band these days is about being in a business. And good on them for doing it. Plus, if a big name company shows interest in YOUR band, it's quite a compliment, and definitely something you can take as a "you've made it".

Evermore are still producing quality music, and I'm sure they'd produce the same quality regardless of big name companies and brands showing interest in them or not.

So good on them.

I'm so sick of seeing people throwing the term 'sell out' around.

IF Evermore were taking directions on how to make their music sound, and were being ORDERED AND PAID by huge companies to sound a particular way, and write particular songs, THEN that would be selling out. But that's not how things are going for Evermore.
The advertising is coming AFTER they have put the hard work in and produced CDs.

The sooner people get off their fucking high horses and come back down to reality and stop accusing Evermore of "selling out" the better. This is bullshit.

Support the fucking band for their music, not who funds them. Shunning a band because of support they get from huge companies is similar to selling out yourself. Enjoy the band for their music.

Why the fuck does everyone care that a band they like is getting money for doing what they love? Be happy for them.

And that's my two cents.

Now I should probably go back and read what everyone else has said >_>

there's a difference between people recognizing you've done hard work and giving you a raise rather than you trying to tell everyone every day that you've done good work and demanding a raise.

trance_faye :

well that's subjective. most of the songs on real life are bland and repetitive, and for me, that's where this whole thing started. i would have less of a problem with the massive adveritising and promotion if they were still producing quality music, because more often than not it's the quality/more "experimental" music that goes unnoticed and could benefit from advertising. but not only have evermore written the kind of songs that would appeal to a lot of people, they feel the need to then constantly shove that into people's faces through advertising and promotions.

trance_faye :

It just seems that for Evermore making money / getting noticed has become as important, if not more, as making music. If you truly love making music then the money & fame should come second to it. Yes you have to make some money from your music if you want to eat dinner and etc, but if your music is good that should come naturally, and there's a point at which it becomes greed.
Take for example their recent competition where they pretty much bribed people to buy their single. they offered people this huge prize for the seemingly small act of buying their single. they didn't care about getting the number 1 position through the quality of their music, they just wanted it. and they were already so close, so it's not like it was unfeasible that they would ever get a number 1 single.

I've heard bands say that as long as they have two people who enjoy their music, they'd make it for those people, so why is it that some bands can somehow care more about music than making money and somehow still survive?
and there are plenty of success stories where bands have gotten famous and made money by slowly building up a fanbase through the quality of their music, rather than constantly shoving their music into people's faces. so it's not like advertising is the only way a band can make money and get noticed.

Like Tango said..

and thanks for taking the time to write all that out. I kept starting on writing up my thoughts and was getting too long winded/ "tangenty" etc. so thanks for saving me the trouble.

Yep, team Pez is definitely right. Cait's got some good points, but there's other routes Evermore could take as opposed to accepting whatever deals come along. Case point: Powderfinger. Possibly the biggest Aussie band around in this country.
See, the dangerous thing is the press is much more fickle in other parts of the world. Look at Jet. They took a big iPod deal, they had one big album, and their second one has flopped because the press and the people both grew sick of them. Shame, really. I'm waiting for the same to happen to Wolfmother.

you obviously only listen to top 40 music where the policy for bands is to advertise and promote themselves as much as possible, as opposed to the many success stories of bands who have gotten famous through the quality of their music, by slowly building up a loyal fanbase.

rue :

they changed their music, yes, but did they do it to make it more accessible on purpose? or is it just because they like that kind of music so they just wanted to do it?

(PS. accessible)

If they don't want to be called sell-outs the next album should be one 80 minute drums-only track.
(Hmm, but maybe that would be selling out to the non-sell-out crew.)

Maybe there should be a poll about which bothers you more about Evermore; the drop in quality of their music, or their constant in-your-faceness from advertising and contests.

I don't know, I have to say that Evermore is the only band that bugs me when I see them on TV and stuff. Maybe that's simply because I've been a member of their forum for close to three years, and it's the only music forum I'm actually a member of.

It sounds like the Aussies are saturated with Evermore, indeed that is not the case for us.

Were not in their situation, so what would we do? I would say that it would be easy for the corporates to take advantage of these guys, but hey they are smart enough to know when to say "NO".

Hopefully their next album will have the same impact as Dreams for us true fans.

Pez I listen to all kinds of music (when I have time). The guys have worked bloody hard to get to where they are now, it was no overnight success.

do i act like i'm in grade 8?

Should I answer that?

Yeah, Queenslanders are smarter *cough*. I'll have only just turned 17 when I finish grade 12. In most other states the finishing age is 18, am I right?
We have the Prep year now, though, so I think it's going to be more in line with the other states.

LMAO! that is so funny as i am in the same situation! Little grade 8's sit in our spot and start yellping all lunch long about how horrified they are about getting needles! After they leave us alone we get the "skanks" of the school abusing us for money! whilst all of this is happening people try to tell me that evermore are homosexual!

on friday this short grade eighter (i'm telling you he wouldn't be any higher than 4ft) come to me and asked me for $2!!! me being in a good mood i gave him 50c and then he asked me for $1.50!!! how ungrateful.

Its a dilemma alright, you want to help, then you get knocked back cos they are ungrateful. Sadly some people can jade us.

"i gave him a dollar"
"she GAVE him a dollar"
"I thought he'd go away if I gave him a dollar."
"Well, of course he's not gonna go away, Mary! You give him a dollar, he's gonna assume you got more!"

I remember a man asked my friends for money but they were too scared by him and wouldn't say a word so I said we had nothing so he would leave.
I felt bad but the girls were really scared by it.

Anyone who asks me for money doesn't get it. I always offer them food and they don't want it, so I'm not giving them money to get food if they're really that hungry.

i was at hungry jack's with a friend once and this guy was going around asking for money, telling every person that he was so poor and he just needed 50c more or whatever to afford his meal blah blah blah, even after he had gotten his 50c from other people. to make things even better, as he was waiting in the queue, with his what-looked-like-brand-new nikes and clothing, his mobile phone rang and the conversation went something like "yeah, i'm getting the money now, don't call me!"

That really sucks. It really puts you off trying to help people. A person was begging for money for food, so I gave him my lunch, he just threw it back at me, what a put off, hey the money's usually for drugs or alcohol anyway!

if they're really too poor to afford drugs/alcohol, surely they'd appreciate a free lunch? not as much as money for the drugs/alcohol, but still..

Alas drugies and alcos don't eat much. The winos in Auckland these day's are a bit more honest and will hold up banners asking "money for booze"!

We were talking about this today on the bus.
My friend's mum was asked for money for food. She had none so she offered the man her pie and he refused it.
Gosh.

That's kinda cool.
My friend was born on New Years Day, 1992, and she's in my grade. So she only just turned 15 at the start of this year, and she'll be 16 when she finishes too.
